Europe has set ambitious targets to reach net-zero emissions — but turning that ambition into reality requires more than political will. It requires large-scale renewable energy plants that are competitive, well-integrated, and built with the support of the communities they serve. That is precisely what LUMENS is designed to help achieve.
Funded by the European Union, LUMENS brings together partners from seven countries to tackle the real-world barriers slowing down the deployment of utility-scale renewable energy sources (RES). From outdated grid infrastructure and complex regulatory frameworks to limited system flexibility and local resistance, these challenges are well known — and too often left unaddressed.
LUMENS takes a practical, knowledge-driven approach. At its core is a dynamic knowledge hub featuring case studies, success stories, open-source tools, and concrete recommendations to guide stakeholders through the entire lifecycle of large-scale RES projects — from planning and sizing to grid connection and market performance.
The project's strategy rests on three pillars: fostering meaningful dialogue between a diverse range of stakeholders, building a rich repository of transferable knowledge, and maintaining an active engagement with key players across European and international energy markets.
By connecting operators, developers, researchers, and policymakers under one common framework, LUMENS aims to make large-scale renewables more reliable, affordable, and competitive — bringing Europe one step closer to a secure, clean energy future.
